Statement from Evanston Mayor Stephen Hagerty On Resignation of City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz

"Today, City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz submitted his resignation from the City of Evanston effective September 27, 2019. Wally will depart Evanston to begin a new role as City Administrator of Issaquah, Washington on September 30.

Wally’s resignation is bittersweet. I’m happy that Wally, his wife, Patrice, and their son, Wally IV, will move closer to family; something that has been of interest to them as their son has grown older. Sadly though, our community is losing a strong leader. Wally has worked tirelessly over the last decade to transmit this City better, greater and more beautiful than when he arrived. He will be difficult to replace.

All organizations, including our great City, must at times go through change at the top. This change offers us an opportunity as a community to define what we want in our next City Manager. To undertake this effort, we will contract with a search firm, engage the community, and conduct a nationwide search. In the end, the City Council and I will select a new City Manager who reflects the values, leadership and character necessary to successfully lead one of the best urban ring cities in America.

We will begin this process at our next City Council meeting on September 9. The Council and I will discuss the appointment of an Interim City Manager to fill the position following Wally’s departure, as well as other next steps.

For now, please join me in thanking Wally for his 10 years of dedicated service to our community, and wishing him and his family the very best in Issaquah."
