Illinois health officials today announced 2,128 new known cases of COVID-19 and 27 additional fatalities, bringing the total number of known infections in Illinois to 238,643 and the statewide death toll to 8,091. Officials also reported 32,751 new tests in the last 24 hours. The seven-day statewide positivity rate is 4.5%.
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is reporting a spike in positive COVID-19 cases among undergraduate students, saying the infections are tied to large parties and gatherings over the weekend, according to a media release.
More than 400 new cases have been identified since classes began Aug. 24, the school said Wednesday afternoon. And if cases continue to rise, UIUC leaders worry that some infected people will require hospitalization.
